California Gold Rush-The building of the megastate
Most all of our countries early history, studied in our public schools, revolves around events in the northeast. From the pilgrims to the revolutionary war, our countries origins are rooted in there. How then is our most populated, and arguably most politically powerful, state located on the opposite coast over 2000 miles away?
The California
gold rush is why. The California gold rush brought people in droves
from all over the country with promises of a quick fix to their
financial woes. The California gold rush lured people with the chance
to earn themselves more money then they ever could earn laboring in
their chosen professions. The key to their fortunes lied in the
America River where James Marshal first discovered gold in 1847. This
discovery coupled with some strong and shameless promoting from one
Sam Brannan the California gold rush was born. There was a fever pitch
as people traveled the 2,000 plus miles to get to the west coast as
quick as possible.
